From March 21st to May 10th, 2025, Gallery Sophie Scheidecker presents Fragile Strength, a new show by the American artist Melissa Ichiuji.

Melissa Ichuiji’s signature works are fabric or ceramic sculptures inspired by themes of erotic awakening and sensual power. This exhibition delves into the intricate fabric of human experience, revealing how strength emerges from fragility.

Fragile Strength is an extraordinary exhibition that invites viewers to discover the intersections of eroticism, vulnerability, and empowerment through a striking collection of figurative sculptures and paintings.

Her signature doll-like sculptures, crafted from vintage textiles, found objects, and natural elements, evoke  themes of sensual awakenings and power. In her ceramic pieces, figures recline, kneel, and yearn, expressing both desire and the bittersweet interplay of eroticism and mortality.  The human body, with its resilient yet fragile nature, remains a central focal point of her artistic exploration. Each piece is an intricate exploration of sensuality, human connection, and the delicate balance between poigniant sensitivity and external strength. These evocative figures, playful in form yet profoundly introspective, carry with them a quiet force that speaks to the delicate beauty of our shared humanity.

Her works, influenced by Surrealism and her background as a dancer, often use visual puns and layered symbolism to question identity, sexuality, and psychic contradictions. With their exposed interiors and poised postures, Ichiuji’s sculptures reveal the tension between grace and exposure, empowerment and frailty. Through them, she offers a deep, multifaceted view of human nature - one that embodies the fluidity of identity and the ever-changing roles that shape us.

In her recent works, Ichiuji’s focus has shifted to the natural world, capturing the sensuality and resilience of botanical forms through both bold, dynamic oil paintings and finely crafted metal sculptures. Her floral compositions in steel, suspended at the height of their bloom, display unapologetic boldness and the unyielding drive for growth. Their roots, raw and exposed, reflect the balance of precarious beauty and enduring strength. Similarly, Ichiuji’s circle paintings, inspired by sunlight at different times of day and season, embody the elevating effects of light and color, drawing from chromotherapy to infuse warmth and optimism into the viewer’s environment. These works celebrate the healing and transformative power of nature, inviting reflection on our interconnectedness with the world around us.

Ichiuji’s creations, whether in steel, clay, fabric or pigment, possess an intimate energy that connects deeply with the viewer. They provoke thought, offering an open invitation to explore our own desires, fears, and hidden vulnerabilities. With Fragile Strength, Ichiuji illuminates the transformative power of human connection, while offering a poignant reminder of our shared tenuousness in a world constantly shifting - socially, politically, and environmentally.

At its core, Fragile Strength celebrates life’s contradictions, reminding us that within our most vulnerable moments lies the strength to endure, adapt, and transform. Join us for this immersive experience, where the delicate and the powerful converge in a timeless reflection on what it means to be human.
